Choose the area before the property
In Phnom Penh, riverfront convenience, quieter residential streets and rapidly changing outer districts feel very different. In Siem Reap, the old-town area offers easy dining while riverside and village-edge stays can be calmer. On islands, the beach and pier determine atmosphere, access and evening options.
Read reviews for patterns
Look for repeated recent comments about noise, cleanliness, water pressure, access roads, construction and staff communication. Ignore one unusually glowing or angry review when the larger pattern says something else.
Questions worth asking
- Which airport, station or pier transfer can the property arrange?
- Is the quoted room reached by stairs?
- Does the neighbourhood stay noisy late at night?
- Can the property store luggage before check-in?
- What is the cancellation and late-arrival policy?
- On an island, which boat and pier should you use?
A good first-trip strategy
Book the first two nights confidently, then preserve flexibility only where your schedule allows it. For peak dates, festivals or a specific resort, earlier booking reduces uncertainty. Do not move hotels merely to save a tiny amount; relocation consumes more of a short trip than expected.
