Between cities and regions
Scheduled buses and minivans
The broadest option for common intercity routes. Ask about the vehicle, pickup location, planned stops, luggage allowance and final drop-off point.
Private car or taxi
Useful for families, groups and routes with planned stops. Agree on the destination, inclusions, waiting time and price before departure.
Domestic flights
Potentially useful between distant regions. Compare the full door-to-door journey, including airport transfers and check-in time, rather than the flight alone.
Passenger trains
Royal Railway operates passenger services on parts of Cambodia’s rail network. Routes and frequencies can be limited, so check the current official timetable before planning around a train.
Boats and ferries
Essential for some islands and river communities. Seasonal water levels, weather and local demand can affect operation. Confirm the last practical return crossing.
Arriving by air
Techo International Airport is the principal airport serving Phnom Penh, south of the city. Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport serves the Siem Reap and Angkor area. Both require meaningful transfer time between the terminal and the city.
Use official airport information for current ground-transport arrangements. Confirm the meeting point when a hotel or driver is collecting you, and do not assume an old article describing a former airport still applies.
Getting around towns and cities
Walking
Central areas of Siem Reap, Kampot, Kep and Kratie can be explored partly on foot, but heat, uneven surfaces, traffic and limited pavements change what is comfortable. Cross roads patiently and avoid assuming vehicles will yield.
Remorks and app-based rides
Remorks—passenger carriages pulled by motorcycles—are common in visitor areas. App-based transport is also available in major cities. Confirm the destination and price before starting when a fare is not set through an app.
Bicycles and motorbikes
Bicycles can suit quiet islands and countryside routes. Motorbike riding brings significantly greater risk and may involve licence and insurance requirements. Do not rent solely because it appears convenient; confirm that you are legally permitted, insured and experienced for local conditions.
Booking well
- Book through the operator or a reputable platform that identifies the operator.
- Save the exact departure point and arrive with time to find it.
- Keep valuables and essential medicine with you.
- Use seatbelts whenever provided.
- Avoid building a non-refundable major activity immediately after a transfer.
- Consider daytime travel when choosing between comparable services.
Accessibility and family travel
Vehicle steps, narrow aisles, unpaved stops and limited accessible facilities can create barriers. Contact the operator with specific questions rather than relying on a general “accessible” label. Families should confirm child-seat availability in advance and may find a private vehicle more manageable on selected routes.
Departure time and location, vehicle type, luggage rules, planned border or ferry procedures, arrival point and any onward transfer. Screenshots of an old timetable are not enough.
