Kratie

Kratie is a small Mekong River town best known as a base for seeing Cambodia’s endangered Irrawaddy dolphins. The dolphins are important, but the destination is broader than a single boat trip: riverfront sunsets, rural islands, pagodas and the changing seasonal landscape of the Mekong make Kratie worth exploring slowly.

Why visit Kratie?

Kratie gives travellers a direct sense of life along Cambodia’s great river. The compact town faces west across the Mekong, making its riverfront especially appealing late in the day. Beyond town, roads and ferries lead to farming communities, temples and dolphin habitat.

The pace is quieter than in Cambodia’s major visitor centres. Come for the river ecosystem and stay long enough to appreciate the communities whose daily lives are closely connected to it.

Seeing the Irrawaddy dolphins responsibly

The freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins found in the Cambodian Mekong are endangered and should be treated as wildlife, not a guaranteed performance. WWF describes their habitat as a limited stretch of the river extending north from Kratie toward Stung Treng. Sightings depend on season, river conditions and the animals themselves.

Most visitors travel from Kratie town to the Kampi area and join a local boat. Choose operators who keep a respectful distance, avoid chasing dolphins and reduce speed near them. Follow boat-community rules, keep voices low and never pressure a driver to move closer for photographs.

Bring binoculars or a zoom lens rather than expecting close contact. A quiet river journey remains worthwhile even when sightings are brief.

Walk the Mekong riverfront

Kratie’s riverfront is the town’s natural gathering place. Walk in the early morning to see local routines, then return before sunset when the heat softens and the Mekong catches the evening light. The central market and nearby streets make an easy introduction to the town.

Water levels change greatly through the year, altering exposed sandbars, currents and the scale of the river. That seasonal change is part of Kratie’s character.

Cycle or ride around Koh Trong

Koh Trong is a long river island reached by a short local ferry crossing from Kratie. A quiet loop passes homes, orchards, fields and pagodas. Bicycles are useful, but surfaces can be sandy or muddy depending on the season.

The island is a living community. Ride slowly, keep clear of farm activity and ask before photographing residents. Confirm the last practical return ferry rather than assuming crossings continue late into the evening.

Visit Phnom Sambok

Phnom Sambok is a hilltop Buddhist site between Kratie and the main dolphin-viewing area. It can be combined with a river excursion, offering a change of perspective over the surrounding countryside. Dress respectfully, remove shoes where required and take care on steps in wet weather.

Consider the 100-pillar pagoda area

Farther north, Wat Sorsor Muoy Roy—often called the 100-pillar pagoda—adds another cultural stop to a longer Kratie itinerary. The Ministry of Tourism lists it among the province’s notable places. Because it requires additional travel, combine it with a carefully planned northern route instead of treating it as a quick add-on.

Explore river communities beyond town

Community-based tourism areas such as Koh Pdao connect visitors with rural Mekong life and dolphin habitat farther north. Arrangements can change, so contact a community operator or experienced local guide before travelling. Experiences should support local livelihoods without intruding on homes or daily work.

How many days do you need?

Two nights works well for most first visits: an arrival afternoon in town, one dolphin-focused outing and time on Koh Trong. Three nights allows a slower island day or a longer journey north. If dolphins are your priority, give Kratie more than a hurried roadside stop.

When to visit

November to February generally brings drier, cooler weather for cycling and road travel. The Mekong is lower in the dry season, while the wetter months create a broader, faster-moving river and greener countryside. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed in any month.

Heavy rain can affect unpaved routes and island surfaces. In hotter months, plan cycling and temple visits for early morning or late afternoon.

Getting there and getting around

Road services connect Kratie with Phnom Penh, Kampong Cham, Stung Treng and some eastern destinations. Routes, departure points and journey times can change, so confirm details directly with the operator before travel.

Central Kratie is easy to explore on foot. Remorks, taxis, bicycles and motorbikes are used for trips outside town. Arrange a return journey in advance for distant sites, especially when combining dolphin viewing with temples or rural communities.

A balanced first visit

Spend your arrival afternoon around the market and riverfront. Leave the following morning or late afternoon for dolphin viewing, adding Phnom Sambok only if the timing remains comfortable. Use the next day for Koh Trong at an unhurried pace. This gives wildlife, town and community life equal weight.
