Kampong Cham invites you to slow down beside the Mekong. The city makes a rewarding stop for travellers who want riverside evenings, lived-in temples and an easy introduction to the landscapes of eastern Cambodia. It is also a useful bridge between a Phnom Penh visit and a longer journey toward Kratie.

Why choose Kampong Cham?
Here, the river is part of the everyday scene rather than a backdrop for a single attraction. Set aside time for the waterfront, local food and a conversation with a guide or host who knows the area. The best visit is not a race through a checklist.
Places to explore
The Mekong riverfront
Start with a walk along the river, particularly when the day cools. Watch how the waterfront changes from morning to evening, and take your time over a meal. The riverfront is a good orientation point before you travel farther from the city.
Wat Nokor Bachey
Near the city, this historic temple complex brings old masonry and contemporary Buddhist life into the same visit. It is worth going with curiosity and respect: keep your voice low around worshippers, dress appropriately and ask before photographing people.
Phnom Pros and Phnom Srei
These neighbouring hills are associated with a local story about men and women and offer another view of the surrounding area. A local guide can explain the story more fully and help you plan a visit that suits the weather and your mobility.
Koh Paen
The island across the river is a way to see a quieter, more rural side of Kampong Cham. You may hear about its seasonal bamboo bridge, but crossing arrangements can change with water levels and construction. Check the current route locally; do not plan around a bridge being open on a particular date.
How much time do you need?
One night allows a riverside evening and a nearby temple visit. With two nights, there is room for a slower island or countryside outing. If you are travelling onward, leave margin in your schedule rather than trying to fit several excursions around a fixed departure time.
Getting to Kampong Cham

A gentle visit plan
First afternoon: settle in, walk the riverfront and enjoy dinner nearby. Next day: choose either Wat Nokor Bachey and the hills, or a slower visit across the river. Add an extra day if you want to combine both without hurrying.
Before you set out
- Transport: road services and departure points change. Confirm your onward journey with the operator and ask where you will be dropped in town.
- River conditions: water levels and seasonal access affect some outings. Check locally before travelling to an island or crossing.
- At sacred sites: respect ongoing worship and avoid treating temples as empty monuments.
- Comfort: bring water and sun protection. If stairs or uneven surfaces are a concern, ask about conditions before visiting hill sites.
