Why go to Prey Veng?

Come for everyday rural Cambodia. There are few formal sights, but the countryside of rice fields, sugar palms and villages shows how most Cambodians live.

What to experience

Neak Loeung and the Mekong

At Neak Loeung, National Road 1 crosses the Mekong on a bridge of about 2.2 km, opened in 2015 and described as Cambodia’s longest. Before it opened, car ferries carried traffic across the river. The riverside town is a good place to stop and watch river life.

Ba Phnom

Ba Phnom, in the south of the province, is a low hill with pagodas and old ruins, associated in local tradition with Cambodia’s early history. Visit respectfully, as it remains an active religious site.

Village life

Cycling or driving slowly through the villages, stopping at a market or a roadside stall, is the best way to experience the province.

How long should you stay?

Most visitors pass through on the way to Svay Rieng or Vietnam. One night is enough for a slower look.

Getting to Prey Veng

Neak Loeung, on the east bank of the Mekong, is about 61 km south-east of Phnom Penh on National Road 1. National Road 11 starts at Neak Loeung and reaches Prey Veng town roughly 30 km to the north.

How to get there

  • From Phnom Penh By road: Neak Loeung is about 61 km south-east on National Road 1, and National Road 11 runs roughly 30 km north from there to Prey Veng town. Confirm bus or minivan options locally.
  • Around Prey Veng Agree the fare and the return trip before heading out to villages.

Book through the operator, your hotel, or one of the platforms above. Cambodia Handbook is independent and not sponsored. Schedules change, so check the operator’s official website or office before you travel. Last checked 19 October 2026. See also transport booking and getting around Cambodia.

Planning notes

  • Getting there: buses and shared taxis run from Phnom Penh; a hired driver makes it easier to reach villages and Ba Phnom.
  • Fees and opening arrangements: confirm current details locally rather than relying on an old price or timetable online.
  • Respect: dress modestly at pagodas, ask before photographing people and keep to marked paths at historic sites.
