Why go to Tbong Khmum?
Come if you are curious about Cambodia beyond the usual route. The province has the country’s largest share of Cham people and Muslims, and some of its oldest archaeological sites.
What to experience
Memot circular earthworks
Near Memot, archaeologists have identified circular embankments around raised platforms, the remains of settlements that may be more than 4,000 years old. Many lie inside rubber plantations and are hard to recognise without a guide, so see them with someone who knows the sites.
Cham communities
Cham villages and mosques are part of the province’s landscape. If you visit, dress modestly, remove shoes where asked and avoid visiting mosques during prayer times.
Rubber and farmland
Plantations and farmland cover much of the red-soil countryside, which you will pass through on the road east.
How long should you stay?
Tbong Khmum is best as a stop from Kampong Cham, or as one night on the road towards Kratie or Vietnam.
