Kirirom National Park: A Thoughtful Visitor Guide

Kirirom offers a different image of Cambodia: higher ground, pine-scented air, forest roads and a slower day away from the heat and movement of the capital.

Best approached as a nature day

Kirirom is not an attraction with one fixed route. Road conditions, waterfall flow and access arrangements can change with the season, so confirm the day’s plan before leaving Phnom Penh.

Why Kirirom feels different

Preah Suramarit–Kossamak Kirirom National Park lies in the eastern Cardamom highlands. Its best-known landscapes are rolling forest, stands of pine, open viewpoints and streams that become more expressive during the green season. The appeal is less about collecting sights and more about leaving the city behind for several hours.

For travelers moving between Phnom Penh and the southwest, Kirirom can also provide a quiet inland chapter before Kampot, Kep or the coast. It should not be treated as a quick roadside stop: the journey into the park and the time needed to walk, pause and find viewpoints are part of the experience.

What a good day looks like

Leave with daylightAn earlier start preserves time for stops and reduces the temptation to hurry back after dark.

Choose one or two walksAsk locally about current trail condition and waterfall flow instead of arriving with a rigid checklist.

Carry your own essentialsBring drinking water, sun and rain protection, closed footwear and anything you need for a simple lunch.

Keep the return flexibleAllow a buffer for slower forest roads and pauses along the route.

Season and comfort

The green season generally brings fuller vegetation, cooler-looking landscapes and stronger water flow, but paths may be muddy and rain can interrupt a walk. Drier months can make access simpler while reducing waterfall volume. Conditions can vary within the same season.

Visitors with limited mobility should ask about the exact stopping points available by vehicle. A description such as “short walk” does not explain the surface, slope or steps, and facilities outside developed areas may be basic.

Travel responsibly

Carry waste back out, avoid loud music in forest areas, do not remove plants, and keep distance from wildlife. Choose established paths and local guidance rather than creating shortcuts. If a waterfall or viewpoint is crowded, patience is safer than trying to reach an exposed edge for a photograph.

Before you go

Check current access with your driver, accommodation or a locally based guide. Do not build a flight connection or another fixed appointment immediately after the excursion. For wider context, compare this guide with our Cambodia nature collection and Phnom Penh guide.
