Kampot Pepper Guide

Kampot pepper connects flavour with place, farming knowledge and protected origin. Visit a producer to understand the vines and processing—not only to buy a packet with a famous name.

What the name means

Kampot pepper is produced in defined areas of Kampot and Kep and protected as a geographical indication. Cambodia registered it domestically in 2010, and it became the first GI registered under the Geneva Act of WIPO’s Lisbon System in 2021.

Colours are stages and processes

Green pepper is used fresh; black, red and white pepper come from harvested berries handled at different stages or through different processing. Producers can best explain how timing, selection and drying affect the finished pepper.

Visit and buy thoughtfully

Choose farms or shops that identify the producer and GI status clearly. A farm visit may include cultivation, processing and tasting, but experiences vary. Ask before entering growing areas or photographing workers.

At the table

Kampot pepper appears with seafood, meat, sauces and contemporary dishes. It is an ingredient with a protected origin, not a requirement that every southern meal taste strongly of pepper.

Planning a farm visit

A pepper farm visit is most useful when it explains cultivation and processing rather than functioning only as a shop. Ask how long the tour lasts, whether advance booking is needed, what languages are available and whether the farm is the actual production site connected to the products being sold.

What to notice

  • How vines are supported and shaded.
  • How berries are selected at different stages.
  • Where washing, drying, sorting and storage happen.
  • How the producer identifies genuine geographical-indication pepper.

Buying with confidence

Look for clear producer information, sealed packaging and traceable GI identification. A high price alone is not proof of origin. Buy an amount you can store well, keep it dry and ask the producer whether whole peppercorns or another format best suits how you cook.

Combine the journey

Farms lie outside central Kampot, so confirm the exact location and return transport. A visit can fit naturally with countryside exploration, and it is worth lingering at one or two farms rather than rushing between several for free tastings.
