Cambodia’s Mekong Irrawaddy dolphins inhabit a limited river corridor between Kratie and Stung Treng. Seeing them can be deeply memorable, but the encounter must remain calm, distant and led by the animals.
Where travellers usually go
Kampi, north of Kratie town, is the most established visitor gateway. Local boats operate when conditions permit. Longer journeys toward communities farther north require more planning and should not be treated as a quick extension.
What a responsible outing looks like
- The boat slows in dolphin habitat.
- The driver avoids chasing, circling or cutting across dolphins.
- Visitors keep voices and sudden movement low.
- No feeding, swimming or attempt at contact occurs.
- The outing is worthwhile even if sightings are brief or absent.
Timing and conditions
River level, weather, visibility and animal movement all affect the experience. Ask locally about current boat operations rather than relying on a month-by-month guarantee. Early or late outings may feel cooler, but no time guarantees dolphins.
Give Kratie more than a stop
Two nights allow a dolphin outing without rushing, plus time for Kratie’s riverfront and Koh Trong. This supports a broader range of local businesses and keeps one wildlife encounter from becoming the whole destination.

Prepare for a quiet encounter
Bring sun protection and secure loose belongings, but avoid turning the boat into a moving photo platform. Binoculars can make distant observation more satisfying. Use a longer camera lens if available rather than asking the driver to approach.
Read the boat’s behaviour
A responsible driver reduces speed, watches the animals’ direction and avoids repeated repositioning for each surfacing. If several boats are present, patience matters even more. A short, distant sighting is preferable to prolonged disturbance.
If dolphins do not appear
The fee still supports a boat journey and local work; it does not purchase control over wildlife. Notice river islands, fishing activity, birds and the scale of the Mekong. Do not demand extra chasing time or dispute the value of the outing solely because the animals remained elsewhere.
Make the trip benefit Kratie
Stay for meals, accommodation and time on Koh Trong instead of arriving and leaving around one boat ride. This spreads spending beyond the viewing site and creates a calmer itinerary.
