Preah Vihear rises along an 800-metre axis of pavements, stairs and sanctuaries at the edge of a plateau. Here architecture and landscape are inseparable—and the journey is part of the visit.
Historical context
The sanctuary is dedicated to Shiva. Its history reaches back to the 9th century, while much of the surviving complex dates to the first half of the 11th century. UNESCO inscribed the Temple of Preah Vihear in 2008 for the exceptional quality of its Khmer architecture, decoration and relationship with the dramatic site.
