Best Time to Visit Cambodia

A practical guide to Cambodia’s dry, hot and wet periods, including regional differences and realistic weather planning.

Short answer: November to February usually offers the most comfortable combination of drier weather and lower heat. Cambodia remains visitable throughout the year, and the greener wet season can be rewarding when plans remain flexible.

Cambodia’s two broad seasons

Cambodia has a tropical monsoon climate. The Ministry of Tourism broadly describes a wet season from May to October and a dry season from November to April. These are useful planning categories, not precise daily forecasts.

November–February

Cooler dry months

Generally the easiest period for long sightseeing days, road journeys and the coast. It is also a popular travel season, so major destinations can feel busier.

March–April

Hot dry months

Heat builds toward April. Begin outdoor visits early, slow the middle of the day and carry more water than you expect to need.

May–October

Wet and green months

Rain often arrives in intense periods rather than continuing all day, but prolonged rain does occur. Landscapes become greener and water levels rise.

What changes by region

Siem Reap and the northwest

Dry months make temple circuits and rural roads simpler. Wet-season greenery, reflective pools and dramatic skies can transform Angkor, while slippery surfaces and storms require more caution.

Phnom Penh and central Cambodia

The capital can be visited year-round. Heat and sudden rain affect how much is comfortable on foot, so plan indoor museums, shaded stops and flexible meal breaks.

Kampot, Kep and the coast

The coast generally receives heavier wet-season rain and rougher seas. Boat and island trips are especially weather-dependent. Confirm conditions locally and accept cancellations when operators consider the sea unsafe.

Kratie and the Mekong

River levels change the appearance of islands, sandbars and currents. Dry months usually make cycling and road travel easier, while the wet season creates a broader river and greener countryside.

A practical month-by-month view

January–FebruaryTypically drier and relatively comfortable; popular for broad itineraries.

March–AprilHotter conditions; plan early starts and slower afternoons.

May–JuneTransition into the rains, with heat, storms and increasingly green landscapes.

July–SeptemberCore wet-season months; expect changing road, trail and sea conditions.

OctoberA transition month when rainfall and water levels may remain significant.

November–DecemberThe drier period returns and outdoor travel usually becomes easier.

Festivals, holidays and crowds

Cambodian public holidays and festivals can bring meaningful cultural experiences as well as busy roads, crowded attractions and reduced availability. Dates may follow lunar calendars or be officially confirmed closer to the event. Check current dates before building an itinerary around a festival.

Weather planning principles

  • Check a short-range forecast shortly before each travel day.
  • Never treat a monthly climate summary as a guarantee.
  • Protect yourself from sun even when the sky is cloudy.
  • Keep electronics and documents dry during the wet season.
  • Respect closures and local safety advice during storms or rough seas.
