Banteay Meanchey sits in Cambodia’s north-west corner, between Siem Reap, Battambang and the Thai border. Its capital is Serei Saophoan, and its best-known town is the border city of Poipet. For travellers, the reason to come is further north: the vast, half-ruined temple of Banteay Chhmar.

Why go to Banteay Meanchey?
Come if you want Angkor-era architecture without the crowds. Banteay Chhmar was built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries under King Jayavarman VII, the builder of the Bayon. It is large, remote and still partly collapsed, which makes a visit feel like discovery rather than sightseeing.
The site matters beyond its beauty. The World Monuments Fund has repeatedly listed Banteay Chhmar among the world’s most endangered sites, and it is on Cambodia’s UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. A Khmer-led conservation project began work here in 2008.
What to experience
Banteay Chhmar
Give the temple at least half a day. Its outer walls once carried long bands of carved reliefs, and some face towers survive among the fallen stone. The site suffered badly from war and looting, so conservation work may close some areas. A local guide helps you understand what you are looking at and where it is safe to walk.
Smaller temples
Banteay Top and Banteay Neang are smaller temples in the province that can be combined with Banteay Chhmar if you have your own transport.
Village stays
Villages near Banteay Chhmar have offered community-based homestays, a good way to support local families and see the temple in early morning light. Ask in advance whether they are operating.
How long should you stay?
Banteay Chhmar is a long day trip from Siem Reap. One night nearby, or two nights in the province, makes the visit far more relaxed.

Planning notes
- Getting there: hire a driver from Siem Reap or Battambang; public transport to Banteay Chhmar is limited.
- At the temple: the stones are unstable in places. Do not climb collapsed sections, and wear sturdy shoes.
- Thai border: the land border with Thailand at Poipet has been closed or heavily restricted since June 2025 after clashes. Check your government’s travel advice and official announcements before planning any overland route, and do not assume the crossing is open.
- Fees and opening arrangements: confirm current details locally rather than relying on an old price or timetable online.
