Give Long Set Beach an unhurried morning

Choose one stretch of sand and experience it well: walk, swim only when conditions feel safe, and leave room to sit beneath the changing coastal light. The point is the island rhythm, not collecting beaches.

An island community

Pause in Kaoh Touch before moving on

Kaoh Touch is both an arrival point and a lived-in village. Look beyond the jetty: walk gently, notice everyday island life and support small local businesses without turning homes or working spaces into photo backdrops.

Koh Rong is Cambodia’s largest and best-known resort island, but it is not one uniform beach destination. Busy arrival areas, quieter bays, fishing villages, forest, mangroves and fast-changing development create several distinct island experiences.

Why visit Koh Rong?

Come for warm sea, long beaches and time away from city routines. The island suits travellers who choose their base carefully: some areas emphasise nightlife and easy access, while others are designed around quiet resorts or small communities.

Choose the right part of the island

Koh Touch

The main arrival area has the broadest concentration of boats, restaurants and budget accommodation. It is convenient and social, but not the best choice for every traveller seeking silence.

Long Set, Sok San and quieter bays

Beaches farther from the main pier can feel calmer, though transport and services vary. Confirm the exact arrival pier and transfer with accommodation before leaving the mainland.

Island nature and communities

Beaches are only one part of Koh Rong. Forest paths, mangrove areas and village-based initiatives reveal more of the island. The Ministry of Tourism has highlighted community ecotourism and plastic-reduction efforts around Prek Svay and Prek Ta Sok.

Development is changing access, roads and the character of some areas. Support local businesses, reduce waste and avoid treating villages as attractions.

How many days?

Three nights gives useful breathing room and reduces the risk of losing most of the visit to transfers or weather. Stay longer if the island is your main rest stop.

When to visit

Drier months usually bring calmer conditions, while the wet season can mean rougher crossings and cancellations. Conditions change quickly; confirm boats and weather directly with operators.

Getting there

Passenger boats generally connect the Sihanoukville area with several island piers. Schedules, operators and arrival points change, so book for your exact beach rather than simply “Koh Rong.” Never assume the final connection runs after dark.

  • From Sihanoukville Passenger boats connect the Sihanoukville area with several island piers. Book for your exact beach rather than simply “Koh Rong”.
  • Last boat and weather Never assume the final connection runs after dark, and expect cancellations in rough weather, especially in the wet season. Confirm the last return with the operator.

About 30 to 40 minutes from Sihanoukville to Koh Touch. Schedules and operators change, so book close to your travel date.

How far is Koh Rong Sanloem?

Roughly 20 minutes by boat from Koh Rong, and it is quieter and smaller.
