Pailin is a small province on the northern edge of the Cardamom Mountains, surrounded by Battambang province and the Thai border. It was separated from Battambang in 1996. The town has a history unlike anywhere else in Cambodia, shaped by gem mining and by migrants from Myanmar. It was also one of the last Khmer Rouge strongholds, which is why the province and its roads were so heavily mined.

Why go to Pailin?
Come for an unusual cultural story. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Kula people from Mogok in Myanmar settled here to mine sapphires and rubies, and their influence can still be seen in Pailin’s temples, food and crafts.
What to experience
Phnom Yat
This hill pagoda is the most important holy site in the province. Its main temple was built by Shan migrants in 1922, and the hill gives views over the town. Dress modestly and visit quietly.
Gem-mining heritage
Pailin was once one of the world’s leading sources of fine sapphires. Large-scale mining has long passed its peak, but gem traders remain. Only buy gems from a trusted seller if you know what you are buying.
Hills and countryside
The surrounding hills are cooler and greener than the plains, pleasant for a drive or a gentle walk on established paths.
How long should you stay?
Pailin works as a day trip or one night from Battambang.

Planning notes
- Getting there: shared taxis and hired cars run from Battambang.
