The province rewards travellers who are comfortable with distance and changing conditions. Its appeal comes from landscape and context rather than a long checklist: lake, waterfalls, rivers, forest edges and communities connected to them.
Yeak Laom
Yeak Laom is a near-circular lake in a volcanic crater close to Banlung. Walk gently, follow local rules and use designated areas. The surrounding cultural interpretation helps place the landscape within Indigenous community life rather than treating it as a swimming stop alone.
Waterfalls around Banlung
Cha Ong, Kachanh and Katieng are among the commonly visited falls. Water volume and trail conditions change by season. Steps and surfaces can be slippery, and facilities should not be assumed.
Rivers and remote routes
The Se San and Srepok river systems support communities and important ecosystems. Trips toward Veun Sai or more remote areas require careful transport planning and locally appropriate guidance.
Indigenous communities
Ratanakiri is home to several Indigenous peoples with distinct languages and traditions. Arrange visits through people who have community permission, pay fairly and ask before entering homes or photographing residents. Cemeteries and sacred places require particular care.
Virachey and protected landscapes
Remote protected areas are not casual day trips. Conditions, permits and community arrangements can change. Use experienced, authorised guides and expect plans to adapt to weather and access.

When to visit and getting around
Dry-season roads are usually simpler, while wet months create greener scenery and fuller waterfalls but more difficult surfaces. Long-distance road services reach Banlung; outside town, arrange transport with someone who understands current road conditions.
