This eastern route follows the Mekong to Kratie before climbing toward Mondulkiri’s highlands. It works best when the road is treated as part of the journey and both wildlife and community encounters are approached without guarantees.
Days 1–2: Phnom Penh
Recover from arrival and gain cultural context before the longer road north and east.
Days 3–4: Kratie
Give the Mekong two nights: one responsible dolphin outing, riverfront time and a gentle exploration of Koh Trong.
Days 5–8: Mondulkiri
Base yourself in Sen Monorom for waterfalls, highland roads and a carefully chosen conservation or community experience. Avoid elephant riding and forced animal interaction.
Should you add Ratanakiri?
Only with several additional days. Banlung is not a quick extension; the extra road time deserves at least three nights once there.
