There is no single correct first route through Cambodia. Siem Reap offers monumental heritage, Phnom Penh brings the country’s contemporary energy into view, and smaller destinations reveal rivers, farms, coastlines and everyday rhythms that are easy to miss on a hurried trip.
Use this guide to decide which places deserve your limited time. The suggested stays are comfortable starting points, not rules.

Kratie
Kratie offers a quieter Mekong journey shaped by river-island life, pagodas and responsible viewing of endangered Irrawaddy dolphins. Wildlife sightings should never be treated as guaranteed.

How to choose with limited time
If you have three or four days
Choose one main base. Siem Reap gives a first-time visitor the strongest combination of major heritage and convenient travel services. Phnom Penh is the better choice if your priority is contemporary city life, museums, food and historical context. Avoid trying to divide such a short trip between distant regions.
If you have one week
Two destinations are enough. Siem Reap and Phnom Penh create the clearest introduction, but they are not the only sensible pairing. Kampot and Kep make a relaxed southern journey, while Siem Reap and Battambang provide a northwestern route centred on heritage, arts and countryside.
If you have ten days to two weeks
Three or four bases become realistic. Keep consecutive destinations in the same broad direction rather than repeatedly crossing the country. Leave space for transfers, weather changes and an unplanned slower day.

Plan around travel time, not only distance
A route that looks compact on a map can still consume much of a day. Road conditions, stops, departure points and seasonal weather all affect travel. Confirm current schedules directly with operators and avoid placing an important activity immediately after a long transfer.
Domestic flights may shorten selected journeys, but a slower overland route can make more sense when nearby destinations form a coherent cluster. The best itinerary is usually the one with fewer bases and more usable time in each place.
